Spicy Fish Curry Recipe | Meen Kuzhambu Recipe with step by step preparation & photos. This is my mom style fish curry recipe.I like my mom’s meen kuzhambu ever.In my home, without fish curry, it doesn’t fulfill our Saturdays :). Sometimes we even cook meen curry for a couple of days in a week.In my hometown, we will get fresh fishes daily from our fish market. It makes the fish kuzhambu yummier than using frozen fish or refrigerated fish.

The fish curry which is prepared by using my homemade meen curry masala with coconut. Just with few ingredients we can make this yummy mouth-watering tangy and sour taste of fish curry.This recipe is a popular one among with my friend’s circle.I have used ‘needle fish’ (in Tamil as Viraal or Murral Meen) in my recipe.You can use any of your favorite fish to make this curry with the same procedure I followed here.

The fish curry tastes too good in the next day than the day we prepared.In the next day,just heat the fish curry for sometimes and use it.It serves well with the combination of cooked rice,idli,dosa,wheat dosa,chappathi or paratha,poori and even with naans.

Ingredients

Needle Fish Steak / Viraal Meen – 8 Pieces
Tomato – 1 chopped
Green Chilli / Pachchai Milagai – 2 slitted
Homemade Fish Curry Powder / Meen Curry Masala – 2 to 21/2 tbsp ( see notes below )
Tamarind / Puli – 1 lemon size
Water – 3 Cups
Sea Salt / Crystal Salt – as needed

To Grind

Fresh Coconut – 1/4 Cup (grated or chopped)
Small Onions / Shallots / Chinna Vengayam – a handful (about 6 to 8)
Garlic / Poondu – 4 to 5 pods (peel the skin off)
Cumin / Jeera / Seeragam – 1 tsp
Curry Leaves / Kariveppilai – 1 spring

To Temper

Sesame Oil / Nalennai – 2 to 3 tbsp
Mustard Seeds / Kadugu – 1 tsp
Urad Dal / Uluththam Paruppu or Ulunthu – 1 tsp
Fenugreek Seeds / Venthayam – 1/4 tsp
Asafoetida/Hing/Perungayam – 2 pinches
Small Onions / Shallots / Chinna Vengayam – 3 Chopped Finely
Curry Leaves – 1 spring

How to prepare spicy Fish Curry | Meen Kuzhambu Recipe with step by step photos

1. Take a big lemon size tamarind in a bowl and soak it in water for 15 to 20 minutes.

2. After 20 minutes, filter the tamarind extract water using a strainer and discard the pulp.Totally we need 3 to 31/4 cups of filtered tamarind water.

3. How to clean and wash fish

Firstly, take the fish and remove fins and other waste parts. Cut the fish into medium-sized pieces and wash it in water once and drain. Then, rub the fish pieces with some salt. Pour the water again and wash fish pieces.Do until it becomes neat and clean.

4. In a mixie jar, add small onions, coconut,garlic pods,cumin, and curry leaves.

5. Grind all the ingredients to a smooth paste with some water.

6.Take a wide pan and pour the ground coconut onion paste.Add 2 to 21/2 tbsp of homemade fish kuzhambu powder into that.

7. Pour the tamarind filtered water (about 3 cups) into the mixture.Mix well without any lumps.

8. Add 2 slitted green chili and chopped tomatoes and stir it.

9.Heat a pan and allow the mixture into the boil.

10.Let it continue to boil for 10 minutes.

11.After 10 minutes, add fish pieces one by one slowly.

12. Gently stir it once.

13.Again boil for 5 minutes and then close the pan with a lid and keep the flame on low.

14.Keep the flame on low for 10 to 15 minutes or until the fish curry reaches your desired consistency.

15.In a tempering pan, heat sesame oil. When it hot, splutter the mustard, then add urad dal,fenugreek, and asafoetida.Fry it for sometimes and then curry leaves fry for few seconds.Now add finely chopped small onions and saute until it becomes golden color.

16.Pour that tempered mixture into the fish curry.

17. Gently stir the fish curry and close it with a lid until you serve.
